May is National Mental Health Awareness Month
What if one of the most effective ways to support student mental health was already in the cafeteria?
Access to nutritious food is essential for growing bodies—but it’s just as important for growing minds. When students have reliable access to healthy meals at school, they’re not just better fed. They’re better focused, better behaved, and better able to learn and connect.
And when those meals come at no cost to families? The impact goes even deeper.
A Full Stomach, A Calmer Mind
It’s no secret that hunger and anxiety go hand-in-hand. Kids who don’t know when—or if—they’ll eat again carry a burden that shows up in the classroom: stress, distraction, irritability, even depression. When school meals are available at no cost to all students, kids no longer have to worry about affording lunch or standing out for receiving “free lunch.” That peace of mind is powerful.
No Hunger, Better Learning
Hungry kids struggle to concentrate. It’s hard to focus on fractions or phonics when your stomach is growling. Studies show that students experiencing food insecurity are more likely to be absent, late, or disruptive in class. No-cost meals help level the playing field so every student can come to class ready to learn—no matter what’s in their fridge at home.
Relief for Families and Schools
When meals aren’t free, families may fall behind on meal payments—through no fault of their own. That can mean stressful letters home or awkward phone calls from school staff about meal debt. But teachers and school staff aren’t debt collectors—and they shouldn’t have to be. With no-cost school meals, parents don’t have to worry about a note in the backpack about money owed, and school staff are spared the emotional burden of chasing down payments. Everyone gets to focus on what really matters: supporting students.
Connection Around the Table
Meals at school aren’t just about nutrition—they’re a chance for students to connect with their peers. When every child has access to meals, it creates more opportunities for kids to sit together, talk, and build the kinds of friendships that are vital for mental health. It also removes stigma, so students who need support don’t feel singled out.
Families Feel It Too
Let’s not forget the grown-ups. When schools offer no-cost meals, it’s a relief for parents and caregivers. That’s one less meal to pack, one less grocery bill to stress over, and one more way schools can step in as true partners in community health.
It’s More Than a Meal—It’s a Mental Health Strategy
From improved attendance to better behavior, stronger friendships to reduced family stress, the ripple effects of no-cost school meals are clear. They’re not just a nice-to-have—they’re a must-have.
North Carolina has already taken steps to make school meals more accessible. But there’s more work to be done to ensure every student in every public school can eat at no cost. That’s where you come in.
