Food Insecurity Limits Strength of Future Workforce
Signing the business statement of concern indicates that you support the work of School Meals for All NC and share the belief that every child in every public school in North Carolina should have access to breakfast and lunch at school at no cost to their families.
A strong workforce is a key pillar of North Carolina’s prized status as one of the best states for doing business in all of America. As business leaders, we know the importance of looking ahead and addressing future challenges.
While North Carolina is a great state for business, we currently have many children who experience significant hunger. Hunger among our students is a challenge deserving of careful consideration. One in five children in North Carolina goes hungry every day – up from one in six just last year. In rural areas, it’s one in three.
Research shows that hungry kids can’t learn. This includes trouble concentrating on lessons and higher rates of absenteeism and behavior referrals. The strain on children in this position can also strain their families. These challenges put health and workforce readiness in jeopardy. That is why we are part of School Meals for All NC.
We encourage policymakers to join us in finding legislative solutions to address student hunger and support a healthy workforce.
